GUEST EXPERT ARTICLE
Fellow specialist and coaches
All to often we focus on the game week events, and many other things, as our school year is getting started. For some of you, this is your first varsity game as the starting kicker, punter or snapper. I have some advice for you to reduce stress, and help prepare you for a successful game day warm up sessions.
1. Ask your head coach or position coach about game day plans for you and your other specialist. Ask him how many footballs will be used, is there someone to shag the footballs to assure time is not wasted. These are some of the important details to find out early in the game week so maybe you can rehearse the warm ups before game day.
2. Come to an agreement on who will be on the field and their roles while you are out there. For example, punters should have 2-4 returners catching your punts, along with managers or teammates to bring the footballs back to the snappers.
3. Kickers can warm up their holders before they hit the field. That's right. Kickers, have your holders kneel a few feet in front of you. Toss a football to them under hand. This simulates a snap, so make the toss have some "pop" to it. This warm up is only needed for about 2 minutes. My kickers do this regularly in practice and on game day, and we can get 20-25 tosses in 2 minutes.
Remember effort takes no talent, have a blessed game. Coach Watts
